Peanut Festival Softball Game

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site

National Park News

The 9th Annual Plains Peanut Festival had something for everyone of every age. From food and games to music and trains. The Peanut Festival was a good time to be had by one and all.
The Festival was held on September 24 and 25, 2005 and is centered around one of Sumter County's claims to fame, peanut production, and the community's most famous residents in active roles.
The final event for the festival was the annual softball game between President Carter and the United States Secret Service who attempted to defend their championship from the Plains High School alumni on Sunday afternoon. The game was held in the softball field in front of the Plains High School Museum and Visitor's Center. The game was enhanced with the presence of Megan McCormick of the Globe Trekker television series. The show can be seen on PBS where a typical episode has a host and camera crew traveling to a country and playing the part of a discoverer of a new place.
Megan was invited to pitch a couple of pitches to President Carter as the game was in progress. After getting over her "jitters" she delivered a pitch that was as good as any other softball pitcher. She was cheered on by the crowd and seemed to enjoy the moment.
The game ended with the Plains High School Alumni winning the game by a decision of, well it does not really matter, but it was a good time had by all involved.
