A year after the bitter struggle over a planned Walmart ended, a new vision for a large area adjoining Wilderness Battlefield has been unveiled.
The Wilderness Coalition – comprised of the Civil War Trust, Friends of Wilderness Battlefield, National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Parks Conservation Association, and the Piedmont Environmental Council – and the National Park Service funded a study to show how economic development and preservation can coexist to the benefit of all.
Orange County considers the area in question the most important opportunity for economic development in the county. The study shows how these economic goals can be reached through a sustainable mix of development without destroying cultural and natural resource values.
So far, reaction to the study has been very positive. More information on the Wilderness Battlefield Gateway Study is available at the link below.
