Texas Man Drowns In Upper Neches River

Big Thicket National Preserve

National Park News

Steven Shipper, 23, of Spurger, Texas, was swimming with a group of friends in the Upper Neches River Corridor Unit of the park on the afternoon of April 8th when he began to struggle in the water, went under, and failed to resurface. Several friends attempted to assist him, but were unsuccessful. A bystander who had heard screaming called 911, notifying the Tyler County Sheriff’s Office of the incident. Ranger Mike Hughes, county deputies and state game wardens searched for his body but were unable to recover it before darkness fell. The search resumed the next day. Shipper’s body was found later that morning. Although the drowning was determined to have been an accident, a local judge ordered an autopsy.
