On the morning of April 4, Fayette County deputies responded to a report of car parked on the New River Gorge Bridge. They located the vehicle, but found no one around. Suspecting a suicide, a hasty search was conducted under the bridge. Due to darkness, the search was unsuccessful and was postponed until daylight. Rangers were notified and responded to assist. Rangers and deputies continued the search at daylight and soon found the body of a 49-year-old man from Petersburg, Virginia, under the bridge. His body was recovered by rangers, deputies, and local fire and EMS personnel. Ranger Karl Keach is investigating ranger for the park, assisted by FTEP trainee Damon Derousse.
