On Saturday, February 4thm the history club from Black Hills State University visited Minuteman Missile National Historic Site to tour the Delta-01 launch control facility and underground launch control center.
The tour was conducted by VIP Al Hall, who is a retired U.S. Air Force missile maintenance supervisor and worked on the Minuteman missile system for over 20 years.
In addition to interpreting the site and role of the Minuteman missiles that were here in South Dakota during the Cold War, Hall himself was the subject of an oral history interview conducted by Dr. Sasha Pursley, a professor at Black Hills State University and Cold War historian.
Al was a member of the On-Site Inspection Agency and was a team member who verified the destruction of intermediate-range nuclear missilesin the former Soviet Union as part of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, recognized as the forerunner to the first Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty signed by U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991.
Minuteman Missile NHS has several VIPs who were former active duty U.S. Air Force personnel, providing living history and invaluable services for our visitors.
