Geologist-in-Park Publishes Book on PRNL

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

National Park News

Dr. William L. Blewett, the 2004 Geologist-in-Park at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, has published a book on the lakeshore’s bedrock and glacial geology, "Geology and Landscapes of Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Vicinity."  Dr. Blewett is the Chairperson of the Geography and Earth Sciences Department of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.  The book is the outcome of a "Geologists in Parks" project that provided for lodging and logistical support.

"Through the GIP program, Dr. Blewett authored two Research Report site bulletins on the glacial history and ancient lake level history of the Lakeshore.  Those reports formed the basis of the new book," stated Gregg Bruff, Chief of Heritage Education.

Additional support was provided by Eastern National, who funded the writing of the second Resource Report.  Shippensburg University graciously provided a fall sabbatical and a development grant that supported field work and writing.

"The geologic history of the Lakeshore is generally well understood by scientists, but much of the relevant literature is unpublished, outmoded, or scattered among a variety of journals, resource reports, and government documents.  The new book is designed to synthesize all published and available unpublished information on the park's geologic history into one source, in what is hoped will be a lively, lucid and richly illustrated narrative," writes Blewett.

Pictured Rocks is an incredible sampling of Vendian (Proterozoic), Cambrian and Ordovician sandstones - all exposed for our study, appreciation and enjoyment, mentioned Bruff.  Most of the half-million visitors to the Lakeshore last year viewed the magnificent towering cliffs and windswept sand dunes that abut Lake Superior in the park.

The volume is published by Wayne State University and is currently available on-line.  It will be in lakeshore bookstores this summer.
