On February 18, Law Enforcement Ranger Mark Seaman observed a man spit into the Crystal Springs Dome Pool in the Big Room of Carlsbad Cavern, which is a public use limit violation pertaining to resource damage in a cave environment. Ranger Seaman approached the man and his female companion and asked them for identification. It became apparent that they were being deceitful and providing false information. Johnathon Lee Nettles was identified by physical characteristics, such as tattoos, and a social security number that he gave later. Ranger Seaman released Nettles to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office on a felony warrant for aggravated sexual assault on a child. Nettles is listed in the Texas Public Sex Offender Registry.
