Support Your Public Lands

Fort Donelson National Battlefield

National Park News

Dover, Tennessee—The National Environmental Education & Training Foundation, supported by nine federal land management agencies and several corporate sponsors, observe the twelfth annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 24, 2005. This national event encourages all Americans to become involved in volunteer projects to support their public lands. During National Public Lands Day 2004, nearly 90,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees, removed trash and invasive plants, and numerous other projects.
In conjunction with National Public Lands Day, Fort Donelson National Battlefield has initiated Park Watch, an effort to reach out and engage people of the local community in our work and kindling within them a shared passion for this mission. Superintendent Steven McCoy stated, “as we embark on this new partnership and relationship, the communities of which we are a part know where we are headed and feel invited and encouraged to join us”. Citizens of the local communities will become the extra “eyes and ears” of the park by taking an active role in stewardship by:
-Helping to Preserve and Protect Resources -Identify Safety and Hazardous Conditions -Watch for and Report Park Threats -Talk with the Park Staff and Participate -Write it Down—But Never Attempt to Intervene
If you would be interested in volunteering your time, contact Volunteer Coordinator Deborah Austin at 931-232-5706 x 103.
