San Antonio Missions NHP will sponsor an Archaeology Day on October 1, 2005 to promote public understanding of archaeological research and the importance of site protection. Visitors will spend a fun-filled day exploring what has been learned about the Spanish colonial period through archaeology. Family oriented activities will include marking and mapping a dig unit, sifting through a mock dig to find artifacts, and demonstrations of flint-knapping and throwing an atlatl. Local historians and archaeologists will present information obtained from artifacts and archaeological excavations about the missions and the native people who lived in them. Exhibits and educational hand-outs will inform visitors about why it is important to protect historic and pre-historic sites from looting, vandalism, and destruction. October is Texas Archaeology Awareness Month which is sponsored and promoted by the Texas Historical Commission (THC). San Antonio Missions NHP, has partnered with THC, the University of Texas at San Antonio's Center for Archaeological Research, and the Southern Texas Archaeological Association to provide a day of activities and informational sharing. This free event provides an opportunity to discover past human cultures, learn about the historical significance of archaeological sites, and the importance of historical and prehistoric preservation.
