Maintenance Employees Save Visitor’s Life

Amistad National Recreation Area

National Park News

Park maintenance division employees Jeff Larsen, Charlie Medina and Robert Trevino have been credited with saving the life of a Canadian visitor who was staying in the park. On the afternoon of January 25th, Larsen saw a man down on the ground next to an RV and ran to him. When the man did not respond to attempts to revive him, Larsen began CPR. He was soon joined by Medina and they began two-person CPR. As instructed by responding protection ranger Steve Krisko, Trevino retrieved an AED from a nearby contact station, returned to the scene, and prepared it for use.  The three NPS employees then employed the AED to shock the victim. Larsen and Medina then continued CPR. They used the AED one more time and shortly thereafter the man began to breathe on his own. He was transported by ambulance to the Val Verde Regional Medical Center and then to a hospital in San Antonio the following day.
