In many areas around the country, Christmas parades are as much a part of the holiday tradition as decorating trees and giving gifts. The towns around Assateague Island National Seashore are no exception and every year park staff join the community in celebrating the season by participating in local Christmas parades.
This year saw the roll out of a brand new parade float – a giant sand castle decked out in full yuletide splendor. Volunteers from every division transformed one of the park’s boats into a whimsical reminder of sunny days on the beach at Assateague.
The float proved to be a big hit with the crowds of parade watchers lining the streets with shouts of “We love Assateague!” making the effort well worthwhile.
Park staff participated in Christmas parades in Snow Hill, Berlin, and Ocean City Maryland, and in Chincoteague, Virginia.
While there are many ways to build connections with local communities, all who participated in the parades agreed that few could be more fun.
