The Georgia Old Time Plow Club

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site

National Park News

The Georgia Old Time Plow Club will conduct a workshop at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site November 9th to 11th, 2005. The workshop will be held for the staff of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site but is also open to visitors. The workshop will be conducted at the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm in Archery, Georgia, just west of Plains. On Saturday, November 12, 2005, the park staff will demonstrate some of their newly acquired skills.
President Carter wrote about his father's mules in his book, An Hour Before Daylight, where he wrote fondly of his ambition to solo plow in his family's garden. "With Jack's fine adjustment of the clevis hitch, the plow's natural course was an even depth, and after the first furrow was turned around the plot, I found Emma simply walked steadily forward in the proper direction, stopping to be turned at each corner. I've rarely had a more satisfying experience."
The Georgia Old Time Plow Club, which is located in Winder, Georgia, will demonstrate and train park staff in mule plowing and shearing. Park Staff and the Plow Club will also refurbish and restore old plows and planters that have been donated to the Boyhood Farm. On November 12, 2005, a special program will be held at the Boyhood Farm with mule and plow demonstrations, blacksmithing, peanut boiling, and broom and mop making.
Make it a family trip to the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site and the Boyhood Farm and experience a taste of life in the 1930's. You may check on upcoming events by visiting www.nps.gov/jica and for school trip information and reservations you can visit www.jimmycarter.info.
