Man Pleads Guilty In Federal Fossil Theft Case

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

National Park News

On September 30th, David Wixon, a resident of Longview, Washington, pled guilty and was sentenced in federal court following his conviction for “depredation of federal property” for excavating and taking a fossilized oreodont skull from the park in 2007. Oreodonts lived 40 to 15 million years ago and are distantly related to present day camels. The sentencing was the result of a lengthy investigation by the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management and a subsequent plea agreement between the United States Attorney’s Office and Wixon. Wixon was sentenced to three years of probation, ordered to pay $4500 in restitution, and was banned from any land managed by the National Park Service for a period of not less than one year.
