Central High School Hosts Non-Violence Workshop on 48th Anniversary

Central High School National Historic Site

National Park News

To commemorate the 48th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High School and Unity in the Community: A Gateway for Humanity, join Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine, and Spirit Trickey, Park Ranger at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site September 24, from 2:30 -5:00 p.m. in the Central High School auditorium. The workshop, geared toward ages 10-18, although all are welcome, will engage students in a participatory discussion on nonviolence as a social change strategy in the past and present.
The program will begin with a 16-minute video, produced by the National Park Service, “Children of Courage.” The video features courageous children who fought to achieve equality for all children during the civil rights movement.
Minnijean Brown Trickey is one of the Little Rock Nine who integrated Central High School in 1957. Spirit Trickey is a Park Ranger at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site with the National Park Service.
The workshop is taking place in conjunction with the second Unity in the Community: A Gateway for Humanity event. Unity in the Community celebrates how far Little Rock has come since the Central High School desegregation crisis almost fifty years ago. The event begins Saturday, September 24 at 8:00 a.m. with a walk retracing the steps of the Little Rock Nine, from the home of Daisy Bates to the Central High Auditorium, where opening ceremonies are planned. Free activities during the day, entertainment, information, food, and merchandise will be available on Park Street in front of Central High. All are welcome and the event is free, although the walk requires at least one ten-dollar sponsor. For more information about Unity in the Community, contact Sanford Tollette at 501-821-3714 or go to the website www.littlerockunity.org.
Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is located at 2125 Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive, across the street from Central High School. The visitor center is open from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
