For the past several years, Petersburg National Battlefield has put out luminary bags in the visitor center, beginning on Memorial Day weekend, and visitors are invited to honor or remember military members by personalizing them.
The bags will be used at Poplar Grove National Cemetery for the annual Veteran’s Day luminary program this year. On August 25th, Cub Scouts Kevin and Glen Meza arrived at the battlefield with their mother, Kimberly, and turned in decorated luminary bags for the November 12th program at Poplar Grove. The boys’ father is a retired US Navy EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) technician and the family is active in EOD memorial and family support programs.
The names on the bags were those of the EOD and SEAL members killed in the Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan on August 6th.
