Kennesaw Mountain a National Public Lands Day Site
Superintendent Dan Brown has announced that Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is a participating site in the annual event “National Public Lands Day,” Saturday, September 24, 2005, (http://www.nlpd.com). The park is actively seeking volunteers to participate by assisting park staff and volunteers from the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club to repair park trails damaged by Hurricane Dennis’ torrential rains in July. Trail crews will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 1:30 p.m. Please contact Marion Harris at 770-427-4686 x 230, or the Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club at http://kemotrailcorps.org, to sign up and for further information.
There are 600 million acres of public lands belonging to the American people. National Public Lands Day is an opportunity to help save and improve public areas by working along side land managers. In a world of bumper-to-bumper traffic, pollution, and overcrowded cities, places to hike, swim, take in fresh air or simply relax are becoming increasingly more important. Caring for them now helps make sure they exist for future generations to enjoy. National Public Lands Day also helps to continue the promise of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps program, a New Deal program that existed from 1933 to 1942, to preserve and protect America’s natural heritage.
Participants will be working with park staff and an established trail maintenance volunteer organization, The Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club. Volunteers need not bring any tools; all equipment is provided by the park.
