Indiana Dunes Experiences Typically Busy July Fourth Weekend

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

National Park News

The July Fourth weekend at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore proved to be busy, as this was one of the few weekends this season with “beach weather.” The park started Friday evening as a co-sponsor of the Porter/Chesterton fireworks display. The fireworks were launched from a barge anchored offshore of Indiana Dunes State Park – the state park is surrounded by the national lakeshore. Approximately 10,000 visitors enjoyed the show without incident. For the rest of the weekend, an additional 81,000 visitors enjoyed the park beach. The 11 commissioned rangers from Indiana Dunes patrolled park resources and responded to numerous violations. Included in these were an aggravated assault, several missing children, numerous drug and alcohol violations, and hundreds of traffic issues. The totals for the weekend include:

290  Warnings
94    Violation Notices
78    Traffic Violations
3      Personal Watercraft Violations
15    Alcohol Incidents
2      Drug Incidents
44    Resource Violations
2      Vandalism Incidents
162   Miscellaneous Violations
2      EMS Responses
