Bicyclist Killed On Tow Path

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park

National Park News

A 56-year-old New York man bicycling on the C&O Canal tow path died on Sunday evening after he was struck by a fallen tree. Neil R. Reich of Forest Hills, New York was bicycling with a companion on a two-day bike trip from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia to Washington, D.C. C&O Canal law enforcement rangers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Department, responding to a report of an injured bicyclist near mile marker 33, between Whites Ferry and Edwards Ferry in Maryland, found Reich amidst several fallen trees. According to his bicycling companion, Reich had stopped to put on his rain coat. His companion continued biking and stopped further down the tow path to wait for Reich. When Reich did not arrive, the other rider turned back. After traversing around several fallen trees, the companion found Reich and called 911. Responders from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue had to chain saw numerous trees to gain tow path access to Reich. The tree struck Reich in the head; he died at the scene.
