On May 25th, Judge Harry Brown swore in Felix Fuller as president of the Shonto Community Governance Chapter in a ceremony at Navajo National Monument.
The Shonto Chapter is located in the northern part of the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona. Chapters are areas of local government within the Navajo Nation where residents elect local officials to govern. A portion of the park is located within the Shonto Chapter and, as such, the monument staff was pleased and honored to host this historic event. This was the first swearing in of a chapter president within Navajo National Monument. Normally, the oath is taken at the chapter house or in Window Rock, Arizona.
There were about fifty local Shonto Chapter residents and National Park Service employees from both Navajo National Monument and Canyon de Chelly National Monument in attendance. Acting Superintendent Lyn Carranza and ranger Curlinda Holiday presented the welcoming address and program, and a small reception was held afterwards.
