As the leaves change color the schedule of the battlefield changes as well. Beginning September 6, 2005 the visitor center will be open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and these hours will remain the same throughout the fall season. The visitor center contains a small museum; a 26 minute introductory video entitled "Weet'uciklitukt: There is No Turning Back"; a viewing deck; and book sales area. Cool nights, mild days, and fewer visitors make it an ideal destination to explore this 1877 Nez Perce War battle site. The Battlefield ranger staff offer tipi demonstrations each day at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm and one guided walk at 1:30 pm weather permitting. The Battlefields usual Entrance Fee of $5.00 per vehicle will be collected through September 23, 2005.
The battlefield is accessible by foot on three self-guided trails from sunrise to sunset. Trail guides are available for the trails, providing opportunities to learn about the battle and the people who participated in this tragic event. During late November, access maybe limited due to snow. The road providing access to battlefield trails may be closed periodically during snowfall and closed for the season after the Thanksgiving weekend.
Schools and large groups are welcome, but are strongly urged to call the Battlefield prior to your visit. This will assure staff availability to assist with your group needs. Ranger led programs will be available if advance notice is given.
Please come prepared for a variety of weather conditions; a layer system of clothing is best. If planning to go onto the Battlefield, it is recommended to spend a minimum of two hours. Take along some food and water. No loaded firearms or hunting allowed on the Battlefield. To check on current trail or road conditions, weather, or to confirm programs call the Visitor Center at (406) 689-3155 during regular business hours.
The battlefield visitor center will be closed Thanksgiving, November 24, 2005 for the federal holiday.
