The park’s visitor center was vandalized sometime during the night of Monday, January 3rd. Park staff arriving for work the next morning found that the front door windows and side windows had been smashed with rocks. It appeared, however, that the building was not entered. The breaking of the windows did not trigger the alarm system, which had been armed on Monday evening. Footprints were found leading to and away from the building, and rangers followed them to a residence located between a quarter and half mile from the visitor center. Two suspects were interviewed and one admitted to the vandalism. The park is working on the case with the assistant U.S. attorney in Flagstaff, the FBI in Gallup, and the Navajo Police criminal investigators’ office. Ranger Fernando Jones is the lead investigator.
