On Friday, August 20th, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Director Jon Jarvis, Senator Claire McCaskill and Representative Russ Carnahan and visited Jefferson National Expansion Memorial for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of architect Eero Saarinen, designer of the Gateway Arch and many of the world’s most distinctive structures. The event was co-sponsored by the St. Louis chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
The dignitaries reviewed the final five designs for the current international design competition to integrate the magnificent memorial and its grounds with St. Louis, the Mississippi River, and Illinois on the other side. A traveling exhibit will visit sites throughout the Missouri-Illinois bi-state area through September 26. The designs can be viewed on the competition website.
The winning design from the competition will be announced on September 24th. Resulting changes to the landscape in and around the park will be completed by October 26, 2015 – the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Arch.
