Celebrating Founders Day with a Founding Father

Independence National Historical Park

National Park News

What would Thomas Jefferson think of the National Park Service?  In commemoration of Founders Day, visitors at Independence National Historical Park got some insight into this challenging question!

The park commemorated Founders Day by inviting Thomas Jefferson to host four programs at the Independence Visitor Center titled “Celebrate Founders Day with a Founding Father.”  Park Ranger Edward Welch gave a brief history of the creation of the National Park Service, pointing out that this was yet another example of an idea that came to life in the United States then spread around the world.  Ranger Welch then introduced Thomas Jefferson (portrayed by actor Steven Edenbo), who spoke to the visitors about the creation of our great nation. Jefferson shared with visitors his great interest in nature and how his ideas for the federal government helped make agencies like the National Park Service possible. After sharing his thoughts to visitors, Mr. Jefferson and Ranger Welch fielded questions from visitors.

The programs were well attended and all visitors who attended the program received park gifts as a memento of the day.
