On August 2nd, the Gary South Shore Railcats, a professional baseball club in the independent Northern League, sponsored a salute to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The ballpark is located across the street from a portion of the park.
“It is a goal of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to increase awareness and support for the park,” said superintendent Costa Dillon. “Partnering with the Railcats allows us to reach a new audience in and around the city of Gary.”
The park goals for this event – to increase awareness of the park and to deliver park safety messages regarding swimming in Lake Michigan and wildfire prevention – were accomplished. Tote bags imprinted with water safety messages and containing water safety brochures were given to the first 1000 attendees. A park fire truck and Smokey Bear were stationed at the stadium entrance and drew enthusiastic attention. The superintendent was also invited to spend an inning on the radio broadcast of the game, where he was able to deliver more information about the park and the safety messages to the listening audience.
The Railcats and the park were both pleased with this event and plan to continue this partnership.
