National Park News

The original painting "America Cares" will be on display at the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site visitor center Tuesday, August 30th from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. to coincide with a stamp unveiling ceremony at Central High School. Artist George Hunt will be available to meet with visitors at the center immediately following the ceremony, until approximately 12:00 noon. Mr. Hunt will meet with visitors and sign lithographs of the America Cares stamp.
George Hunt painted "America Cares" (1997) to honor the Little Rock Nine and commemorate the desegregation crisis at Central High School. Hunt was commissioned to create an original painting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the event. The painting was on display for four years in the First Lady’s conference room in the White House.
"America Cares" artwork will be featured on the Little Rock stamp as part of the To Form A More Perfect Union series that the U.S. Postal Service is unveiling at Central High School Tuesday, August 30 at 11:00 a.m. According to the US Postal Service, To Form A More Perfect Union commemorative postage stamps “recognize the courage and achievements of the men and women who, during the years of the Civil Rights Movement, struggled to bring the vision of our founding fathers closer to reality.”
Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is located at 2125 Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive, across the street from Central High School. The visitor center is open from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free. For more information call (501) 374-1957.
