The "basement rocks" of Denali and most of central Alaska consist of Precambrian to Early Paleozoic (1 billion to 500 million years old) continental sediments and volcanic rocks, all of which have undergone at least 3 periods of metamorphism (heat & pressure alteration). In this photo taken near the Park entrance, the folded and faulted schist (light colored rock) and basalt (dark rock), create a patchwork of color along a deep gorge of the Nenana River along the George Parks Memorial Hwy (Alaska Route 3).
