In the past, Candlilia (the low broom-like plant in the foreground) was harvested in the Big Bend region to make wax. This view is from along the Old Ore Road in eastern side of the national park. The high plateau of the Chiso Mountains is in the distance. The Chiso Mountains are the eroded remnants of a large volcanic area that formed in middle Tertiary time.
