Perhaps the most exotic geological terrane in Alaska, the Chulitna Sequence, purportedly originated as marine sedimentary rocks in a South Pacific oceanic environment. They then drifted eastward to "dock" near present-day Idaho, and finally moved north to arrive in central Alaska near the southern boundary of Denali Natl. Park and Preserve. Certain rock types within this sequence, called "redbeds" (the red rocks visible in the center of this picture, labeled TRrb), and are found only in Idaho and at this location in Alaska. The redbeds of Idaho and Alaska were probably once connected (deposited in the same place) and are evidence of the long distance these rocks have traveled.
