This view is looking east from the Cholla Garden toward the valley of Pinto Basin. Pinto Mountain is on the left. During the period between 4,000 to 2,000 years ago a wetter climate in the region supported a relatively stable human population (called Pinto Man). The population vanished about 2,000 years ago, leaving behind a rich archeological record. Archeological sites in the Pinto Basin wash area are protected and inaccessible without permission from the National Park Service.
