Weathering and erosion of granite bedrock in the Little San Bernardino Mountains produce a "grussy" soil (weathered granitic sediment) that accumulated on alluvial fans that fill the high valleys in the park area. This view is looking west from Park Boulevard about 4 miles east of the West Entrance Station.
