The winter of 1998-1999 brought inordinate amounts of snow to the Olympic Mountains. Hurricane Ridge received over 746 inches from November 15 to April 5, while 350-400 inches is average. The heavy snowpacks piled up and slid numerous times in most every avalanche chute throughout the park, sending 100 year old trees and piles of debris to the valley bottoms.
