The National Cemetery is the final resting place for Union soldiers killed at the Battle of Antietam and other Maryland campaigns. The Private Soldier Monument is a huge granite statue at the center of the cemetery. It reaches skyward 44 feet-7 inches, weighs 250 tons, and is made up of 27 pieces. The soldier (nicknamed "Old Simon" by the locals), made of two pieces joined at the waist, depicts a Union infantryman standing "in place rest" facing homeward to the north.
