This view from the Painted Hills Overlook Trail shows the John Day Formation exposed on the southern flank of the Carroll Rim. The Picture Gorge Ignimbrite caps the rim. A 1.5 miles hiking trail leads to the top of the bluff from the Painted Hills Overlook/Carroll Rim trailhead parking area. This image shows a common sagebrush and a juniper in the foreground - both are common plants of the high desert in eastern central Oregon.
